EDD claim helper: work search log, certification prep and job applications
Certifying with EDD every two weeks means answering the same questions and keeping a record of where you looked for work. This page does the busywork: log each job contact in seconds, copy a whole week when UI Online asks, prep your answers before you log in, and estimate what a part-time week will pay. It cannot log in or certify for you, and it never asks for your EDD login.

EDD's guide says to record: date applied; company name; company address; person contacted; type of contact (in person, phone, online); type of work applied for; results.

What to write down, and when EDD asks for it
EDD suggests keeping a record of the dates and places you looked for work; it helps if EDD contacts you about your eligibility. If you certify online or by phone, you do not send the record in each time, but keep it immediately available in case EDD asks. UI Online has an optional Work Search Record screen during certification where you can enter your efforts or skip it. EDD's own record forms use these columns: date applied, company name, company address, person contacted, type of contact (in person, phone or online), type of work applied for, and results. If you certify on the paper Continued Claim Form (DE 4581) and EDD marks the box under question 3 with an X, you must fill in the Work-Search Record on the back for the weeks you claim.
How many searches a week, and what counts
EDD does not publish one fixed number for everyone. Its rule is one or more work search activities each week, and EDD gives you your own instructions: item 8 on your Notice of Award (DE 429Z) carries yours, for example to look for full-time work each week. Follow what your notice says. What counts, per EDD: searching job listings; applying, interviewing or taking a civil service exam; asking friends, former employers or your community about openings; sending resumes or posting one on a job board; contacting employers; creating a professional networking profile; registering with a staffing agency, temp agency or recruiter; going to job fairs, networking events or job clubs; preparing to look (updating your resume, job-search videos); and permissible training such as computer literacy or English classes. Union members count by being registered and meeting dispatch rules. You do not have to look for work if you are in state-approved training (such as California Training Benefits), in an employer Work Sharing program, have a job offer starting soon, are on a temporary layoff returning within 30 days, have a specialized skill with few local openings, are in a trade dispute, or are in a seasonal shutdown. EDD decides this from your certification answers.
Certifying: timing and reporting part-time pay
You certify every two weeks; the first time is about two weeks after your claim is processed, and EDD tells you when it is time. Each week runs Sunday to Saturday. If you certify by mail, submit within 14 days of the "Complete and Mail This Form On" date on the form; certifying early or late can delay or deny payment. If you worked, report your gross pay (before deductions) for the week you did the work, not the week you were paid, even if you have not been paid yet. Report your total hours for the week across all employers, and the last employer you worked for that week. If your earnings get too high or you go back to full-time work, EDD may make your claim inactive, and you would reopen it to certify again. How part-time pay changes your payment: if you earned $100 or less that week, the first $25 is not counted; if you earned more than $100, the first 25 percent is not counted. The rest is subtracted from your weekly benefit amount, and state law rounds the payment up to the next whole dollar. EDD's examples: a $145 weekly amount with $26 earned pays $144; a $315 weekly amount with $200 earned pays $165.
CalJOBS and interviews
Most claimants must register in CalJOBS and post or update a resume within 21 days of the date on the Notice of Requirement to Register for Work (DE 8405). If EDD selects you for a Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA), you must fill out the questionnaire (DE 8531), including its work search section listing your searches from the two weeks before the appointment, and bring it; you must also add or update a CalJOBS resume first. Missing the appointment can affect your benefits. For a phone eligibility interview, EDD mails a notice (DE 4800) with the questions it may ask, and you may be asked for more information: having your log ready makes this easier.
