Lost your job in Louisiana? How unemployment works
Louisiana pays regular unemployment insurance through the Louisiana Workforce Commission (Louisiana Works). Weekly benefits run $35–$282 for up to 12 weeks. Max weeks are 12 to 20, set by the average of the three most recently published seasonally adjusted state unemployment rates before the month you file (12 weeks at 5.0% or less, up to 20 weeks at 8.5% or more). Louisiana's rate is around 4.4% (BLS), so 12 is the maximum today; confirm on your monetary determination. Claims filed before Jan 5, 2025 had 26 weeks. Up to 8 extra weeks (Additional Benefits) are possible while in approved training. 1 unpaid waiting week. Last checked .
What to do this week
- File your claim now. File your initial claim when you become unemployed; the benefit year starts on the Sunday of the week you file. File your first weekly request the Sunday after you apply, and you can file any day until Saturday 11:59 p.m. CT of that benefit week (Sunday to Saturday). You can file online, by phone. Open the LWC filing page or call 1-866-783-5567.
- Gather your records. The agency will ask for your last employers, dates and pay. To qualify: At least $1,200 in total base-period wages, and total wages of at least 1.5 times the wages in your highest quarter. Self-employment wages do not count.
- Start certifying every week. Request benefits every week online in HiRE or by phone at 1-866-783-5567 (automated system with a PIN). At least 5 work search activities per week for claims filed on or after Jan 4, 2026 (3 for earlier claims). Temporarily laid off, union members and those in approved training may be exempt.
- Line up other help. Louisiana SNAP income limits, Louisiana health coverage.

How much you could get
The LWC Benefit Rights guide (Rev. 08/2026) says weekly amounts run between $35 and $282. The LWC FAQ still lists a $275 maximum, so the older FAQ figure appears out of date. No official page states an effective date for the table. How it is figured: One twenty-fifth of the average of total wages paid in the four base-period quarters (rounded down to a whole dollar), if base-period wages are at least $1,200; minimum $35, capped at the state maximum.
At the top of the table — $282 a week for 12 weeks — the most a claim can pay is $3,384. That is a ceiling, not a typical claim; most people get less because the amount follows past wages.
Who qualifies
- Base period. The first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. The current quarter and the lag quarter are not used (example: file in Dec 2025, wages from July 2024 to June 2025 are used).
- Work and wages. At least $1,200 in total base-period wages, and total wages of at least 1.5 times the wages in your highest quarter. Self-employment wages do not count.
- If you quit. You are disqualified if you quit without good reason; to requalify you must earn wages equal to 10 times your weekly benefit amount.
- If you were fired. You are disqualified if fired for misconduct, including illegal drug or alcohol use, and must earn 10 times your weekly benefit amount to requalify; aggravated misconduct (such as theft or violence) cancels that employer's wages.
- Part-time, gig and self-employed work. Under La. R.S. 23:1593 your weekly benefit is reduced by weekly wages above 50% of your weekly benefit amount or $50, whichever is lower. The LWC guide describes this as earning up to 50% of the benefit without a reduction, so check the amount on your weekly request. Self-employment does not count as covered wages for qualifying.
