Lost your job in Nebraska? How unemployment works

Nebraska pays regular unemployment insurance through the Nebraska Department of Labor. Weekly benefits run $70–$582 for up to 26 weeks. Total benefits are the lesser of 26 times the weekly benefit amount or one third of base-period wages; DOL lists duration as 10-26 weeks. 1 unpaid waiting week. Last checked .

What to do this week

  1. File your claim now. File the week you lose your job or your hours are cut. The claim is effective the week you apply, and weeks before the effective date cannot be paid even if you meet every requirement. You can file online, in person. Open the NDOL filing page or call 402-458-2500 (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays).
  2. Gather your records. The agency will ask for your last employers, dates and pay. To qualify: At least $5,440 in the base period (changes yearly), with at least $1,850 in one quarter and $800 in another, from employers who pay unemployment tax.
  3. Start certifying every week. File a weekly claim online in NEworks for each week; the claim week runs Sunday to Saturday and you can file starting Sunday after the week ends. Five reemployment activities per benefit week, at least two of which must be applications for suitable work, plus an online searchable resume in NEworks.
  4. Line up other help. Nebraska SNAP income limits, Nebraska health coverage.

How much you could get

NDOL states the maximum weekly benefit for 2026 is $582. The $70 minimum comes from the US DOL July 2026 Significant Provisions table (NDOL's pages do not state a minimum). How it is figured: The highest-earning base-period quarter of wages is divided by 26 (NDOL pages also describe this as divided by 13, then halved), rounded down to an even dollar, up to the maximum.

At the top of the table — $582 a week for 26 weeks — the most a claim can pay is $15,132. That is a ceiling, not a typical claim; most people get less because the amount follows past wages.

Who qualifies

  • Base period. Standard base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you apply. An alternate base period can be used if you do not meet the earnings requirement under the standard one.
  • Work and wages. At least $5,440 in the base period (changes yearly), with at least $1,850 in one quarter and $800 in another, from employers who pay unemployment tax.
  • If you quit. Quitting without good cause disqualifies you; good cause includes conditions of work, compelling health reasons, or leaving to escape spousal abuse.
  • If you were fired. Discharge for ordinary misconduct disqualifies you for the discharge week plus 14 weeks, and the employer must prove it; aggravated and gross misconduct are penalized more heavily.
  • Part-time, gig and self-employed work. Report gross wages for every week you work; if you earn less than your weekly benefit amount you may get partial benefits, and if you earn more you get nothing that week. Independent contractors and workers for employers that do not pay UI tax are not eligible.

If you are denied
Nebraska Appeal Tribunal, online in NEworks, by email NDOL.Appeals@nebraska.gov, fax 402-471-1734, or mail (P.O. Box 98941, Lincoln, NE 68509-8491) Keep certifying every week while the appeal is pending.
Overpayments
Anyone overpaid for any reason must repay it; NDOL can intercept weekly benefits or state and federal tax refunds, and fraud adds a 15% penalty. By statute, NDOL may not recoup by withholding future benefits if you were without fault and recoupment would defeat the law's purpose or be against equity and good conscience; the handbook describes no other waiver for regular UI overpayments.
