Lost your job in West Virginia? How unemployment works

West Virginia pays regular unemployment insurance through the WorkForce West Virginia. Weekly benefits run $24–$662 for up to 26 weeks. Maximum benefit is 26 times the weekly rate; partial-benefit claimants can stretch the balance over more weeks, not past 52. 1 unpaid waiting week. Last checked .

What to do this week

  1. File your claim now. File in the week you become unemployed or lose hours; the claim is effective the Sunday of the week you file, and an earlier date needs a backdating request to your local office. You can file online, in person. Open the WFWV filing page or call 800-252-5627 (Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm Eastern (1-800-252-JOBS)).
  2. Gather your records. The agency will ask for your last employers, dates and pay. To qualify: At least $2,200 in base-period wages, earned in more than one quarter.
  3. Start certifying every week. Weekly certification each week, online (fastest) for the Sunday-Saturday week just ended, filed Sunday through Friday and due by 5:00pm Friday. At least four work search activities every week, documented and kept for review; register with job services within six weeks of filing. Exempt: jury duty, approved training, union hiring hall members, Low Earnings Report and Short-Time Compensation recipients.
  4. Line up other help. West Virginia SNAP income limits, West Virginia health coverage.

How much you could get

The statute's benefit table runs from $24 to $662 a week and is unchanged since the 2024 amendment (effective July 1, 2024). The total benefit is 26 times the weekly rate. How it is figured: Weekly rate comes from a statutory benefit table by wage class based on total base-period wages (from $2,200 up to $62,650 and over).

At the top of the table — $662 a week for 26 weeks — the most a claim can pay is $17,212. That is a ceiling, not a typical claim; most people get less because the amount follows past wages.

Who qualifies

  • Base period. First four of the last five completed calendar quarters before the claim; an alternative base period applies if you do not qualify on the standard one.
  • Work and wages. At least $2,200 in base-period wages, earned in more than one quarter.
  • If you quit. Leaving work voluntarily without good cause involving fault of the employer disqualifies you until you return to covered work for at least 30 working days.
  • If you were fired. Discharge for misconduct disqualifies you for the week of discharge plus six weeks and cuts maximum benefits by six times the weekly rate; gross misconduct is a longer disqualification.
  • Part-time, gig and self-employed work. Partial benefits equal the weekly rate minus wages above $60 in the week; self-employment and odd-job earnings must be reported. You must be available for full-time (35+ hours) work.

Good to know in West Virginia

  • The July 2024 claimant handbook still says the maximum was $662 'in 2023'; the statute table (amended 2024) still tops out at $662 for base-period wages of $62,650 or more.
  • The appeal window is only 8 calendar days, much shorter than most states.
  • The weekly-benefit minimum ($24) is the lowest wage class in the statute table for $2,200 in base-period wages.
  • Official workforcewv.org web pages returned 403 to automated fetches; facts come from official PDFs and the legislature's code site.
