Lost your job in Idaho? How unemployment works

Idaho pays regular unemployment insurance through the Idaho Department of Labor. Weekly benefits run $72–$624 for up to 26 weeks. Weeks range 10-26 per benefit year, set by the ratio of total base period wages to highest-quarter wages and Idaho's average unemployment rate (26 weeks is possible at a ratio of 3.56+ when the rate is below 3 percent). No extensions based on the unemployment rate. 1 unpaid waiting week. Last checked .

What to do this week

  1. File your claim now. Apply (or reopen your claim) the week you become unemployed or your hours are cut; Idaho law does not allow claims to be backdated. You can file online. Open the Idaho Labor filing page or call 208-332-8942 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Mountain Time (click to chat 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m. MT)).
  2. Gather your records. The agency will ask for your last employers, dates and pay. To qualify: At least $1,872 in one quarter, and wages in the other three quarters totaling at least 25 percent of the highest quarter.
  3. Start certifying every week. Weekly certification online in the Claimant Portal (Sunday after the benefit week through the following Saturday), 24/7. Five valid work search actions every week in your local labor market, plus registration at IdahoWorks; employer-attached workers (return within 16 weeks) must stay in contact with the employer.
  4. Line up other help. Idaho SNAP income limits, Idaho health coverage.

How much you could get

The maximum weekly benefit is $624 for new claims filed from the first full week of January 2026 until the first full week of January 2027. The $72 minimum is the $1,872 quarterly wage floor divided by 26. How it is figured: Highest quarter wages in the base period divided by 26, up to the legal maximum (55 percent of the state average weekly wage).

At the top of the table — $624 a week for 26 weeks — the most a claim can pay is $16,224. That is a ceiling, not a typical claim; most people get less because the amount follows past wages.

Who qualifies

  • Base period. Regular base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters; if you do not qualify, the alternate base period (last four completed quarters) is tried.
  • Work and wages. At least $1,872 in one quarter, and wages in the other three quarters totaling at least 25 percent of the highest quarter.
  • If you quit. Quitting disqualifies unless you had good cause connected with the employment (working conditions, job tasks or employment agreement); personal reasons unrelated to the job do not count, with exceptions such as certain military-spouse moves.
  • If you were fired. You are disqualified if discharged for workplace misconduct in connection with employment; the employer has the burden of proving it.
  • Part-time, gig and self-employed work. If you earn less than half your weekly benefit you get the full benefit; above half it is reduced dollar for dollar; above 1.5 times the benefit you get nothing for the week. Report all self-employment income; becoming self-employed full time ends eligibility.
