Lost your job in New Mexico? How unemployment works

New Mexico pays regular unemployment insurance through the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions. Weekly benefits run $116–$624 for up to 26 weeks. Up to 26 weeks of regular benefits (US DOL lists 14-26 weeks; total is the lesser of 60% of base-period wages or 26 times the weekly amount). 1 unpaid waiting week. Last checked .

What to do this week

  1. File your claim now. The claim date is the Sunday of the week you file; with good cause (circumstances beyond your control) an initial claim can be back-dated to the Sunday after your separation. Each claim starts with an unpaid waiting week, and you must register for work within 14 days of filing. A late weekly certification is allowed only with good cause and within 14 days of the end of that week. You can file online, by phone, in person. Open the NMDWS filing page or call 877-664-6984 (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
  2. Gather your records. The agency will ask for your last employers, dates and pay. To qualify: Wages in at least two quarters of the base period; the US DOL table lists a minimum high-quarter wage of $2,818.70.
  3. Start certifying every week. Certify for each week you claim: online anytime Sunday through Saturday, or by phone with the UI Operations Center (877-664-6984, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Unless exempt, you must make at least two different work search contacts every week and keep a log of the date, type of work, employer, contact and result; NMDWS may ask for the log.

How much you could get

I could not find an NMDWS page with the current minimum and maximum. The US DOL July 2026 table lists a minimum of $116-$166 and maximum of $624-$674, the higher figures including the dependents' allowance. Under 11.3.300.327 NMAC the allowance is $25 for each unemancipated child, up to two children, and may not exceed 50% of the weekly benefit amount. How it is figured: 53.5% of your average weekly wage in the highest-wage base-period quarter, kept between 10% and 53.5% of the state average weekly wage; a dependents' allowance can add to the amount.

At the top of the table — $624 a week for 26 weeks — the most a claim can pay is $16,224. That is a ceiling, not a typical claim; most people get less because the amount follows past wages (an allowance for dependents can raise it).

Who qualifies

  • Base period. The first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before the claim start date; an alternate base period (the last four completed quarters) is used if you do not qualify under the standard one.
  • Work and wages. Wages in at least two quarters of the base period; the US DOL table lists a minimum high-quarter wage of $2,818.70.
  • If you quit. Leaving work voluntarily without good cause connected with work can disqualify you under NMSA 51-1-7; to restore eligibility you must earn wages equal to at least five times your weekly benefit amount (11.3.300.317 NMAC). The 2015 DWS handbook gives no good-cause list.
  • If you were fired. A discharge for misconduct connected with work can disqualify you under NMSA 51-1-7, and the same five-times-weekly-benefit-amount wage requirement applies to restore eligibility (11.3.300.317 NMAC).
  • Part-time, gig and self-employed work. If you work less than full time and earn less than your weekly benefit amount you may get partial benefits, and you must report gross wages for the week you earned them; the DWS FAQ has an item on whether Uber and Lyft drivers are eligible but its answer could not be read.
